Environmental legislation in Europe will soon ban the use of certain substances in electronics products.

The two key European environmental directives are:

• WEEE: Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment
• RoHS: Restriction of Hazardous Substances

The RoHS 2002/95/EC directive restricts the use of the following substances on products sold into European markets from July 1, 2006:

• Lead
• Mercury
• Cadmium
• Hexavalent Chromium
• Polybrominated Biphenyls
• Polybrominated Diphenylethers
